Florida consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous states in the country for drivers. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported over 350,000 car accidents statewide in 2025, with more than 2,900 of those proving fatal.

Accidents happen on roads of every size throughout the state, but a handful of highway stretches account for a troubling share of those numbers. If you’ve been injured on one of Florida’s more dangerous roads, knowing what you’re up against can help when it comes time to pursue a legal claim for compensation.

Below is a closer look at the highways that have earned the worst reputations in the Sunshine State.

Interstate 4

I-4 has been called the most dangerous interstate in the entire country on more than one occasion. A Teletrac Navman report, which analyzed NHTSA fatality data from a recent four-year period, found that the 132-mile highway connecting Tampa to Daytona Beach was the only road in the study averaging more than one fatality per mile.

During that four-year window, 150 people were killed in collisions along the route. Orlando was specifically identified as the deadliest section as well.

Interstate 75

Running from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula all the way to South Florida, I-75 passes through several of the state’s most accident-prone regions. Fatal crashes have been especially common near Fort Myers, Sarasota, and Tampa over the years.

A study by The Zebra, which analyzed NHTSA fatality data from one recent year, ranked I-75 as the fourth deadliest highway in the country, with an average of 13.27 fatalities per 100 miles. The highway’s length and its heavy mix of commercial truck traffic make it a persistent danger for passenger vehicles.

Interstate 95

I-95 runs 382 miles through Florida and carries an enormous volume of traffic along the state’s eastern coastline. The Zebra’s analysis of NHTSA data ranked I-95 as the single most dangerous highway in the entire country by total fatalities, averaging 14.88 deaths per 100 miles. A large portion of those accidents occurred on the east coast of Florida, particularly near Jacksonville and Brevard County

South Florida bears the brunt of the danger along this corridor. A separate study examining two decades of crash data identified a single mile of I-95 in Fort Lauderdale, between the I-595 interchange and Marina Mile Boulevard, as the deadliest highway mile in the entire United States, with 24 fatalities recorded between 2000 and 2019. Heavy congestion, frequent construction zones, and a constant flow of commuter and tourist traffic all contribute to the risk.

US-19

US-19 may fly under the radar compared to the interstates listed above, but it has proven to be one of the deadliest roads in the state on a per-mile basis. The highway runs through parts of Pasco and Pinellas Counties, with certain segments having recorded fatality rates well above the state average.

Parts of US-19 pass through rural communities with long, poorly lit stretches of road. Those conditions become the most dangerous at night, and the risk climbs even further from there when impaired or distracted drivers enter the picture.
